Dental crowns can be another procedure in cosmetic dentistry to help improve your smile. Depending on the condition of your teeth, a dental crown may be an option for you. A dental crown is like a cap made of porcelain fused to metal that permanently fits directly over your entire tooth repairing broken or fractured teeth, misshapen, weak, or brittle teeth, teeth that have large metal fillings, teeth unresponsive to whitening treatment, or teeth that have undergone root canal therapy. The purpose of a dental crown is to provide a natural looking way of hiding imperfections or severely damaged teeth. Dental crowns look and feel natural by blending in with your existing teeth and bite.
During your first visit Dr. Cook will conduct an evaluation of your mouth and teeth to determine what cosmetic dentistry procedure is best for you. If a dental crown is part of your treatment plan here’s what you can expect. We will need to take impressions of your teeth and bite to provide a model of how to best design your natural looking crown. The model is sent to a dental lab where your crown is hand made with precise craftsmanship. After the impressions are taken, Dr. Cook may need to administer general anesthesia to numb your mouth and teeth, then remove any unhealthy portions of your tooth.
We will handcraft a temporary crown to cover your tooth and provide protection from sensitivity while your permanent crown is being made. Your next visit is when we permanently place the dental crown over your tooth, ensure a proper fit, and make any adjustments necessary.
Your dental crown will look, feel, and function just like your regular teeth. Just like your natural teeth, it’s important to practice proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly when you have a dental crown. With proper care and maintenance your dental crown should last you for years to come.
