Dental Implants-Answers to Commonly asked Questions

dental implant questionsPoway and Rancho Bernardo, CA

Have you lost one of your permanent teeth? If so, then replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant may be the best choice you can make for your oral health and appearance. An implant is the finest tooth replacement currently available in dentistry, but getting an implant is a big decision that represents a major commitment of both your finances and your time. Your Poway implant dentist Dr. Nicol Cook would like to answer these frequently asked questions about dental implants.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

This decision is made on a case-by-case basis, after a personal consultation with your implant dentist. At this consultation, Dr. Cook will review your past health history to see if there are any pre-existing conditions that may complicate the procedure. Also, you should have good overall oral hygiene before receiving an implant. Patients with gum disease should have the infection treated and resolved before receiving a dental implant. In general, however, if you have good oral health, dental implants may be the right fit for you.

How is a dental implant made?

A dental implant has three components. The first is the implant screw itself, usually made of an extremely durable metal such as titanium, which is surgically inserted into the jawbone. An abutment is placed on the screw once installed, and the implant is topped with a crown—made of dental porcelain, a beautiful, stain-resistant material that looks completely natural. The result looks and feels more like a natural tooth than any other type of tooth replacement available.

How long does it take to get a dental implant?

The length of the procedure varies from person to person and depends on how quickly you heal. The crown cannot be placed until your jawbone has fused to the implant, a healing process that usually takes about six months. Other procedures such as a bone graft may be necessary but will be determined during your consultation. If the dental implant is replacing a tooth that is visible when you smile, such as a front tooth, Dr. Cook will fabricate a natural-looking temporary crown to blend in with your smile until your healing process is complete.

How much do dental implants cost?

Implants cost more than other methods of tooth replacement. Generally speaking, and considering the long-term benefits of dental implants, we believe that the costs are well worth the investment as opposed to a dental partial or bridge that often needs replacing every decade or so. The cost of your dental implant procedure may vary, depending on various factors. However, our staff will break down all expected financial costs before beginning any work.

Are implants superior to other tooth replacement options?

In a word… yes! Implants have several advantages as compared to partial dentures or bridgework. A dental implant is fixed in the mouth, stimulates the jawbone to prevent resorption, and is designed to last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Implants also are convenient and can be cleaned by brushing and flossing it just like your other teeth. Other tooth replacement options simply do not provide these same benefits.
