Ways to Prevent Cavities

tips to prevent cavitiesPoway and Rancho Bernardo, CA

Advances in dentistry have made it easier than ever to have a cavity repaired, but isn’t it better to just avoid getting a cavity in the first place? Maintaining a high level of dental health requires more than just brushing and flossing. Your Poway family dentist at Smiles by Dr. Cook is here to recommend some simple changes you can make to help lower your risk of cavities.

Bring on the water: Water is the best beverage choice you can make. Dr. Nicol Cook recommends you drink water because not only is it the best source of pure hydration, but water also has zero calories and does not contain any sugars or acids, two substances prevalent in sodas and fruit juices that can wear away the enamel of your teeth. And, because water keeps you hydrated, it encourages the flow of saliva, which also helps to wash away bacteria and food particles.

Get cheesy: Growing up, you probably were told that milk and dairy products were good for your teeth and bones because of the calcium content, but eating cheese provides another benefit to your oral health. Specifically, cheese is low in acid, helping to balance the overall pH level in your mouth. A low pH level (below 7.0) means the majority of what is present is acidic, and acid can do major damage to your mouth by deteriorating enamel, the valuable outer layer of the structure of your teeth. Cheese also contains compounds that naturally adhere to your teeth, providing another barrier protecting them from erosion. Finishing off a meal with a piece of cheese, rather than a sugary dessert, is a great way to safeguard your dental health until you have an opportunity to brush.

Seal it up: At Smiles by Dr. Cook, your Rancho Bernardo family dentist believes in the importance of preventive care—meaning making early diagnoses of changes or potential problems in your dental health or doing pre-emptive treatments to help keep problems from developing in the first place. For pediatric patients, a great preventive measure is the placement of sealants, a thin, non-toxic resin coating that your dentist applies to the entire chewing surface of teeth. Sealants usually are best on the back teeth, which do the most work and also tend to be the most difficult for children to clean. Sealants usually last between three and five years but have been known to remain effective for as long as a decade or even into adulthood. Considering that tooth decay is the most widespread chronic disease among all children in the United States, receiving a sealant treatment is worth it!

Getting cavities is not inevitable

One role that a qualified family dentist in Poway should serve is to educate patients. Your regularly scheduled check-ups every six months represent a great opportunity for this education to take place. At Smiles by Dr. Cook, our entire team of oral health professionals can help educate you on ways to prevent tooth decay, whether that means instruction on the proper brushing and flossing techniques, providing nutritional advice, performing a cleaning that removes all the cavity-causing plaque from your teeth, or administering a fluoride treatment that provides an additional layer of defense against your dental health.
